I worry that we talk too much about the specific treatments we would like to try, and not enough about how to ensure that people actually have access to care in the first place. I would argue that the first thing that needs to be done, if we're at all serious about addressing the mental health crisis, is to achieve universal health coverage We know that Medicaid expansion was associated with substantial improvements in access to care and overall mental health; as such, it seems logical to presume that ensuring universal access would be an important first step towards improving overall outcomes.
